*Oct 9 - SIR results from Bruce Mabry -
Southwestern International Raceway
Tucson, AZ
Oct. 7 and 8, 2006
An open Test and Tune and two remote displays kicked off the Jets and Funny Car
weekend at SIR. Basha’s Market and the Cactus Moon were treated to displays
featuring Nitro Funny and Jet Cars for the fans to get up close and visit with
the drivers and crew. Back at the track, racing action was getting under way
with the Quick 32 door cars and Quick 16 dragsters and the Quick 16 motorcycles
getting in some practice before Saturday’s elimination rounds. Friday night also
saw the 1st round of qualifying for the CIFCA funny cars. The #1 qualifier for
the meet was Paul Peterson who ran a 7.500 on his first pass out of the box.
Saturday’s second round of qualifying for CIFCA followed the 1st and 2nd
rounds of the Raymond Dixon Memorial Jr. Dragster Race. The capacity crowd
was treated to more than just fast side by side racing action. The Tucson Lobos
Wheelchair Basketball team and the University of Arizona Disabled Track Team
provided exhibitions to a very enthusiastic audience. There were even two races
to the 1/8-mile by the track team whose members have competed in the Boston
Marathon and the Para Olympics. A huge car show in the pits saw some first time
winners with newly completed hot rods.
This was the last of the season for CIFCA with three racers within two rounds of
winning the title. When eliminations started, Chill Scardino, who led the points
chase almost the entire season, needed only one round to sew up the
championship. This was not to be when Paul Peterson won the event and also won
the championship with a final round win over local racer Tony D ’Oca. Tony won
the last race at Sacramento and made it to the final here.
Tony left red with a -.024 and 183.32 MPH to hand the title to Peterson.
Paul had a .027 light and ran 7.473 at 178.95 MPH.
The Perma Cool $100.00 burn out contest winner was Buzz Miller in his 2001
Cadillac, the only non-blower funny car in the field. The closest to the dial
$100.00 award went to local racer Danny Levitt, Jr. with a .006 light and a run
of 7.550 at 177.79 MPH in round #1.
The night sky was alive with fire as nine jet cars with names like California
Smokey, Blu-By-U, The Interceptor, Earth Link, and Thunder Struck shook the
stands and fans with their five second – 280 plus MPH passes.
Nitro Funny Cars also shook the ground with their own five second, 250 plus MPH
passes. Steve Neese in the Neese & Knowles funny, the Powers and Steel car, and
the Speed Sport of Jim Broome as well as Sean Dale and his newly painted ‘ 69
Charger had the standing room only crowd yelling for more. The drivers and crews
did not disappoint.
The crowd was treated to a Quick 32 door car field that came down to Don Toia’s
roadster and the current SIR Super Pro Champion Bill Kidd. Toia dialed an 8.30
and ran an 8.303 at 158.50 MPH for the win when Kidd turned on the red light by
thirteen. Bill dialed a 9.29 and ran a 9.316 at 142.18 MPH.
The Quick 16 dragster saw a match-up of the #1 and #2 qualifiers. To add more
drama, Don Toia had already won his 3rd race in a row in his roadster.
Don and his dragster had the opportunity to get his 3rd double-up race when he
came to the line to face Vito Adragna’s Undercover chassis, rear engine
dragster. Don dialed a 7.71, left first with a .053 light and ran a 7.722 at
168.56 MPH to complete something others only dreamed of doing. Don has won three
races in a row in both his dragster and his roadster. Vito ran closer to the
dial of 7.43 with a run of 7.433 at 178.80 MPH, but just ran out of real estate
trying to catch Toia.
The Quick 16 motorcycle final saw the team captain, George Berry dial an
11.14 and run an 11.337 at 118.42 for the runner-up spot. The win went to Tom
Patterson’s Kawasaki. Tom had a .017 reaction time, dialed a 9.52 and ran a
9.632 at 127.62 MPH into the winner’s circle.
The Raymond Dixon Memorial Jr. Dragster Race 8 – 12 year old champion was Ray
Olsson. Ray dialed an 11.38, ran an 11.467 at 54.40 MPH. Tegan Rhodes was the
runner-up when she dialed an 11.28 and ran under her dial with a
10.934 at 59.68 MPH. The 13 –17 year old champion was Matt Hawk over Eric
Dockins. Matt dialed 8.24 and ran an 8.446 at 70.22 MPH. Eric was about
two-hundredths behind at the tree with his .067 light. Eric dialed an 8.84 and
ran a 9.032 at 72.33 MPH.
Four trophies were handed out in the car show area. The host club plaque went to
Cass Seagroves and his 1971 Chevelle. The Best of Show plaque was awarded to Roy
and Claudia Hester and their 1951 Chevy Nomad. The 2nd place award went to Ryan
White and his 2005 Dodge Rumble Bee. Buddy Althouguia took home the third place
plaque for his 1966 Mustang Coupe.
The next races at SIR are on Friday, Oct 27th and Saturday, Oct 28th.
Friday’s race is an open test and tune with gates at 4 PM. Saturday is a daytime
race with gates at 8 AM and will include our King of the Track competition, our
first installment of the 1/8 Mile Shoot Out Series and a ¼ mile Gambler.

*Sept 26 - Results from DRR race
at SIR - From Bruce Mabry
Southwestern International Raceway
Tucson, AZ
DragRaceResults.Com came to Southwestern International Raceway the weekend of
September 21st, 22nd and 23rd. The Open Test and Tune on Friday saw a large car
count with several local racers and lots of out of town heavy hitters take to
the track. Jim Broome’s nostalgia funny car put on some exhibition passes. There
was also a pick-up truck show down between Skip Sweet’s beautiful black 1950
Chevy going against Rocky Salcido’s 1955 deep purple Chevy. Rocky made two
passes in the low, low nine-second range to take the truck wars title for the
evening.
Saturday the Jr. Dragsters were the first to take to the track. Kelsie Jacob
dialed an 8.04 and ran an 8.107 at 80.11 MPH for the final victory over Erin
Higgins. Erin dialed a 9.49, but was a little off on the run at
9.609 at 69.83 MPH.
The final in the Trophy Category went to Matt Hawk who dialed a 16.64 with a
.050 light and ran a 16.773 at 80.52 MHP when Mark Gilmore was a little late at
the hit. Mark dialed an 11.00 then broke out with a 10.859 at 121.08 MPH.
The Non-Electronics final featured two beautiful bow ties. The red and white ’57
Corvette of Tom Payton was in the zone from round one to the win in the finals.
Tom had a .021 reaction time and dialed a 10.90, running a
10.919 at 120.07 MPH. Zach Huffman’s Vega wagon had a .095 light and dialed an
11.36, but broke out by two thousandths at 116.41 MPH. When the Electronics
final came to the starting line it paired the #1 qualifier with the #3 in the
points charge for DRR. More drama was created, as after 39 DRR events, there had
not been a double up winner. With the 40th event in the books, the first double
up win went to Rustin Mayse from Frost, TX.
Rustin dialed a 7.87 and ran a 7.880 at 156.50 MPH. The #3 racers in points for
DRR, Luke Bogacki from Woodville, AL took the runner-up spot with a .013 light.
He dialed an 8.11 and ran an 8.138 at 152.28 MPH.
Sunday morning brought bright sunshine and hard fought competition.
Saturday’s Jr. Dragster winner, Kelsie Jacob, found herself in the finals again.
Although quicker at the tree, Kelsie broke out giving the win to Jonathan
Bradford, Jr. Jonathan had a .101 light, a dial of 8.06, and ran an 8.084 at
78.94 MPH. Kelsie’s light was a .015 with an 8.48 dial and a run of 8.471 at
75.74 MPH.
The Non-Electronics class saw a race that was won by a six-inch margin at the
stripe. Berry Gossett from San Angelo, TX in his 1940 Austin dialed a 10.00. He
ran a 10.009 at 135.19 MPH for the win. Luke Bogacki had a better light of .023
to Berry’s .035, but could not run the number. He dialed a 10.08 and ran a
10.101 at 129.00 MPH.
The Electronics class pitted the door car of Larry Spitalli against the Luke
Bogacki’s rear engine dragster for Luke’s second final of the day. Once again
Luke was the runner-up. His reaction time of .007 was late compared to Larry’s
.002. Larry then ran a 10.139 on the 10.13 dial at 132.13 MPH.
Luke ran an 8.094 on an 8.08 dial at 163.73v MPH. Luke has been to SIR five
times and has run in the final at each appearance. The SIR race was pivotal for
the DRR points chase where Berry Gossett took over 1st place in Non-Electronics,
the first time double winners in Electronics in 40 DRR races went to Rustin
Mayse, and Luke Bogacki also in Electronics lost and gained back the points
lead.
The next event at SIR is our Jets and Funny Car Show on the 6th and 7th of
October. There will be Nitro Funnys, Nostalgia Funnys, a Wheel Stander and the
Raymond Dixon Memorial Jr. Dragster Race. Gates are at 4 PM on Friday and 3 PM
on Saturday.

Southwestern International Raceway

Friday night, September 15th was the open Test and Tune for everyone, and the kick-off to our Supers and Top Comp night on Saturday. Along with the big car count, SIR held a Gambler to keep all the racers sharp. The final round in the Gambler pitted the dragster of Martin Corella against the blue Mustang of John and Judy Thoma. Martin dialed a 12.83 and had a .003 light, but broke out to give John the win. John’s .015 reaction time with an 11.24 dial and run of 11.257 at 115.69 MPH took the cash.
When the gates opened on the 16th of September, the temperatures were cool and the racers were ready. The large field of Top Comp competitors came from as far away as Tustin Ranch, California. The final though was between two local racers who are no strangers to the winner’s circle. As the two dragsters took the green light, Don Toia left first with a .007 reaction time. Don dialed an 8.31 and ran an 8.341 at 149.60 MH. The runner-up spot went to Chuck Hawk Jr. when chuck dialed an 8.27 and ran an 8.327 at a close 149.25 MPH.
Don Toia, of Don’s Hot Rod Shop brought two cars for Saturday’s Supers Race, the dragster for Top Comp and the roadster for Super Comp. Don had already put the Top Comp win in the books. The Super Comp final Put Don up against the hard charging Martin Corella in his rear engine dragster. Martin left first with a .017 light to Don’s .026, but at the quarter mile Toia added another victory to his resume. Don ran a 9.17 at 161.77 MPH to Martin’s 9.189 at 166.17 MPH on the adjusted 9.15 index. This was the second time this year that Don has doubled up on the same night in two different cars.
Super Gas racer Joe Calixtro from Nogales, AZ was the #1 qualifier when he ran right on the 10.18 index with a zero, however the final pitted the #2 and #3 qualifiers against each other. Jerry Colton from Gilbert, AZ in his beautiful 1957 Corvette Roadster was the champ when Joe Freeman turned on the red light by .007. Jerry ran under the index with a 10.147 at 151.53 MPH, nevertheless had already taken the win from Jerry’s ’27 T Ford.
The motorcycle riders had a great evening running double eliminations. The final was decided by a coin toss in the pits with the win going to Tom Patterson over Craig Woods. Both riders were running right on their numbers with great lights in each round of competition.
A Box or Electronics Gambler added to the night’s excitement. Friday night’s gambler winner was looking far a repeat win as he found himself in the final against the dragster of Jay Axtell. Jay dialed a 9.17 but broke out by 2 one-thousandths to make John Thoma another two time winner this weekend. John dialed an 11.21 and ran an 11.239 at 119.37 MPH with a .009 reaction time. Jay had a .037 light and ran a 9.162 at 139.11 MPH.
Hank Axtell drove his ’79 El Camino to the runner-up spot against Dennis Dosch and his ’72 Maverick. Dennis was on a run to the final all night long in the Non-Electronics or No-Box category. Dennis had a .091 reaction and dialed a 12.38 running a 12.404 at 107.59 MPH for the win. Hank had a .129 reaction time. He dialed a 12.21 and ran a 12.273 at 110.53 MPH.
The next race at SIR will be the DRR Big Bucks Bracket Race on Friday, Saturday and Sunday September 22-24.

Southwestern International Raceway
Tucson, AZ
The 8th of September 2006 drew ½ the New Mexico drag racers to SIR for our
Slicks Only Test and Tune. No rain, but overcast skies made for fast speeds and
quick ETs. Two new Advanced ET Drivers Licenses were handed out, one to Caren
Cooper riding her Blue Sky sponsored motorcycle. The other license was awarded
to a Super Gas racer in his beautiful 1968 Cobra Torino who came over from
Silver City, New Mexico. For the racers looking for competition, SIR threw in a
gambler. As the rounds wound down, the final put two bow ties against one
another. Tim O'Moore's 1985 Camaro had to face the red and white 1957 Corvette
of Tom and Vickie Payton. Tom's 355 CI Vette took the win when Tim's Camaro
could not make the call at the tree. Tom pulled the Corvette to the starting
line and just broke the beams for the win and to save his equipment for the next
race.
Saturday, September 9th started early with the Jr. Dragster Team Race #7 taking
on the 660' at 4 PM. With the 1st round completed, the Big Wheel competitors
finished up their 7th race of the season. Jacob Trammell from Casa Grande, AZ
edged out Travis Morgan for the win. Next up was the 8-12 year old category.
Local racer, D. J. Tom took the win from Avondale, AZ resident, James Royce. D.J.
dialed a 9.32 and ran 9.335 at 66.20 MPH while James dialed an 8.95 and ran a
9.048 at 72.36 MPH. The 13-17 age group pitted two multi-time winners in the
final. They left the line with a one-thousandth advantage to Donny Toia. As they
crossed the strip, Matt Hawk broke out by 3 one-thousandths to give the win to
Toia. Donny dialed a 9.98. He ran a 10.08 at 62.71 MPH with a .055 reaction
time. Matt had a
.056 reaction time and dialed an 8.26 and ran an 8.23 at 75.12 MPH. The Jr.
Dragsters also ran a consolation race. Two 17 year olds made it into the last
round. Kristen Stevens ran closer to her numbers when she dialed an
8.06 and ran an 8.062 at 79.76 MPH against Jordan Hart's dial of 8.10 and a run
of 8.113 at 79.10 MPH, but Jordan took the race away from Kristen at the hit
with a .030 reaction time to her .054.
Once again SIR held a race with the "pinks" style format during our Sport
Compact / Street Legal night. After several negotiations and eliminations, the
final placed a 2001 Ford Lightning pickup of Scott Fredericks against the
Hayabusa ridden by David Leventhal. David gave the Ford 6 car lengths, but ran
so well in the final, he won by just over one.
A burnout contest sponsored by Discount Tire (Golf Links and Kolb) ended the
action packed night right at 2 AM. Joe Gerstel in his street Legal Camaro took
home the gift certificate in true smoky, tire shredding style.
The next event at SIR is an open Test and Tune on Sept 15th for all cars and
motorcycles. September 16th will feature the Super Categories and Top Comp
racers from Arizona, New Mexico and California.

*Aug 24 - Team Firebird final race date changed to Sept 16, gates at 5pm
*Aug 24 - From Bruce Mabry at SIR
- Southwestern International Raceway
Tucson, AZ
Aug. 19th at SIR was the 3rd session of our AAA Auto Club Street Legals.
Sport Compacts, Imports, and Street Legal domestics came in force to "race the
strip not the street" from 9 PM, Saturday night until 2 AM Sunday morning. Cars
from 20 second ETs to Ryan Woon's 8 second Toyota Supra ran open test and tunes,
grudge matches, and flagman start races. Ryan's Supra, sponsored by WOTM
Motorsports in Phoenix is the fastest and quickest 6 speed Supra on the planet
with 8.60s at above 160 MPH. Saturday night he ran an
8.98 at 163+ MPH during open test and tunes.
The flagman or "pinks" format start had eight cars and three motorcycles racing
for the 1st place and runner-up trophies provided by the Tucson Corvette Club.
1st place ended in the hands of John Sylliaasen in his '67 small block Dodge
Dart. John is a seasoned racer already at the young age of 19. John has been
racing the Dart in the High School Team category for the last three years. The
runner-up trophy went to Mike Leunen and the beautiful orange and black 1963 500
hp Chevy pick-up. Mike gave a two-car length head start to John's Dart and made
up over a car length to lose by only a fender. Mike also is a seasoned racer,
running the truck in the Street Category for Team SIR until 2003 before taking a
break of a couple of years.
The next race at SIR is on Saturday, Aug. 26th and will be the Inaugural Car
Club Night. Car clubs from southern Arizona, New Mexico, and the Phoenix area
will grudge race or show their cars in what we anticipate to be a huge show.
Gates will open to competitors at 4 PM, tech will close at 8 PM, and the track
will secure at 11 PM.

*July 26 - Team Speedworld decision awaits
Firebird's- From Victoria Griffey
*July 26 - SIR Slicks Only - From Bruce Mabry
Southwestern International Raceway
Tucson, AZ
July 21st, 2006 was the second of our Slicks Only Test and Tunes. The racecars
that came were treated to warm temperatures both ambient and on the track. Cars
started going down track about 6 o'clock when the track was still 132 degrees.
As the air started to cool and the surface temperature decreased, a Gambler
added to the fun. The semi finals featured two big block Mopars and a ford
powered Camaro. Pat Neal in the Camaro dialed an
8.98 and although he red lit by .005 still ran a 9.040 at 146.21 MPH. Rick
dialed a 10.77 with a .008 light and ran an 11.33, but Pat Neal's red light took
Frazier all the way to the finals. The by run went to the "Junk Yard Dog" Dodge
owned and driven by Denny Parker. The Parker Dodge got to about ½ track and the
flex plate spun all the bolts out. This gave the final win to Rick Frazier in
his 1979 Arrow Pick-up.
Saturday the 22nd was our second AAA Auto Club Sport Compact Street Legal Night.
The night began at 9 PM and ended at 2 AM Sunday. The car count and spectator
count increased by almost ½ again over the 1st event two weeks ago. The flagman
start also grew in car count by double. This time car lengths were given to the
competitors as well as a trophy for 1st Place and Runner-up. At SIR nobody loses
in the "pinks" format as SIR gives winners pictures and trophies. The final
pitted a 2004 Mustang convertible driven by Mike Gardner and was spotted 25
lengths against Jake Burris in his '67 Camaro. The official at the ¼ mile stripe
called over the radio that the 1st place trophy went to the Mustang by less than
one car length.
Saturday's race also featured a car show in the pits hosted by The Arizona
Drifters Car Club. The host club plague went to Richard Algeria in his beautiful
2002 tricked out Cavalier. The People's Choice award went to Daniel Corbett's
late entry 2005 Scion.
The next event at SIR is our 3rd Slicks Only Test and Tune on Friday, Aug.
4th. Gates open at 4 PM. The 3rd AAA Auto Club Street Legal Sport Compact is on
Saturday, Aug. 5th with gates at 8 PM and racing beginning at 9 PM.

Just want to clarify the ROC and Sunday event's for the ET Finals this year.
We know that we will bring "FOUR" ROC winner of each of our class to
represent our track. That is a total of 20 racer for the ROC race on

receive Wally, Jacket, Ring, Gold Card, Payout, and trip to Pomona (HS does
not compete at Pomona). Sunday winner will receive Wally, Jacket, Gold

Junior Dragster news - From Bob Lamb
Just thought I would let you know that I have a son on the Dean's list at
ASU. Ryan just completed his junior year at ASU with 5 A's and a B. he also
recieved three AA degrees from MCC. (I will bet you cannot tell Cindy and I
are proud parents ?) We might run our super comp car a couple more times in
2006. It will be parked throughout 2007. I retired on March 14th 2006 after
28 plus years with the City of Mesa. Lots of time on my hands now. We just
picked up a Brian Smith re-worked junior dragster for our long time hired
gun Sara Mitchell. There are pending plans to ad my 16th junior hired gun
sometime next year. Since departing Firebird in January Cindy has started a
new junior dragster/Big wheel racing series still sponsored by Grand Canyon
University and new sponsors including a multi year deal with an oil company.
Races are being held at SIR and Speedworld. Cindy's 4th points race will be
at Speedworld at 6pm on August 26th. Savings bonds for the winner, runner-up
and #1 qualifier.

Southwestern International Raceway

Race fans in Tucson were treated to a full three days of racing at SIR the
